A downloadable browser extension

Watch less. Do more.

Ever find yourself spending too much time on YouTube? Have you ever tried setting limits on the site, just to find that it limits your productivity in other ways? - after all, YouTube can be very useful when used the right way. DoTube is a browser extension available for Chrome, which modifies YouTube to cause you to spend less time on it, without blocking the site entirely.

Upon installing DoTube, in a pop up window custom daily time limits (which can be different for weekdays and weekends) can be set. Once these are saved, each day you are allowed that time to browse YouTube like normal, with no restrictions (other than one which we'll discuss later). However, upon using up your allocated time, DoTube modifies the website to remove distractions, such as the home screen, recommendations, and video end screens. However, it still allows you to do useful things, such as watch videos via search or an external link. On top of this, DoTube prevents Shorts scrolling at all times, since this feature is particularly guilty for wasting a user's time with little benefit.

Features:

  • A pop up window which allows separate custom weekday and weekend daily limits to be set.
  • Distractions removed once your time is up, including the home screen, recommendations, and video end screens.
  • Constant preventation of YouTube shorts scrolling.
  • Daily time spent on YouTube constantly visible in the top left of the site.
  • No account required, and quietly works in the background.
  • To prevent lag, the extension forces you to watch the video in full screen when the limit has passed.

Currently Available for Chrome. If you use another browser, I recommend downloading chrome, adding DoTube to chrome, and finally blocking YouTube from your normal browser (for example for Safari this is done within System Settings/Screen Time/Content & Privacy/Web Content/Access to Web Content. Here should be the option to limit adult websites, where "www.youtube.com" and "youtube.com" can be added to the restricted list). This allows you to still use the extension, without switching browsers. There are currently no plans to make DoTube work other browsers.

Note: this was my first browser extension and also my first time using JavaScript. Due to this, throughout programming I used the internet and AI to a greater extent than I normally do for OW Games products.
